WALL AND FLOOR FAN COIL · ITALIAN DESIGN

Design fan coil: climate control for the whole home in 12 centimetres.

Reverso takes the place of old radiators and does it all: it heats, cools, dehumidifies and purifies the air.

As quiet as underfloor heating, it uses just 4 W and works with low-temperature water: ideal for heat pumps.

01 · THE PROBLEM

Fan coils or radiators? The perfect terminal unit did not exist. Until now.

Heat pumps and condensing boilers perform at their best only with low-temperature water. The terminal units most homes have today are not made for this.

RADIATORS

Heating only, at high temperature

They lower the heat pump's SCOP and the efficiency of condensing boilers. Slow to heat up, and useless in summer.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Invisible, but slow

Its long thermal inertia makes it react late to load changes. Cooling needs complex and costly dehumidification, and parquet or carpet slow it down even more.

TRADITIONAL FAN COILS

Bulky and noisy

Centrifugal fans and painted sheet metal. They work, but nobody wants to see them in a well-designed living room.

02 · THE NEW-HOME PARADOX

The better you insulate, the more you need cooling.

We compared 100 m² homes with low, good and high insulation, from Lampedusa to Belluno in Italy. Insulation cuts heating demand, but in warm cities it increases cooling demand: heat gets in and can't get out.

Designing a system with only winter in mind is today's biggest limitation. Reverso works 12 months a year with a single terminal unit.

Heating, cooling and hot water from a single machine. A lower flow temperature means higher SCOP and SEER: with water at 45–40 °C a Reverso FS 800 delivers over 3.5 kW of heat.

With a condensing boiler

A boiler truly condenses, saving 25–30% of gas, only if the water returns cold. With radiators this doesn't happen; Reverso also works with a 55–35 °C temperature drop.

The whole range connects to the existing radiator pipes, even 12 mm ones, for heating: no chasing walls, no new floors. For cooling as well you need insulated pipes of at least 16 mm and a condensate drain.

07 · FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Fan coils: questions before you choose

Fan coils or radiators: which is better?

The radiator is the heat pump's enemy, even for heat pumps using the eco-friendly R290 gas: to heat properly it needs water at 65–70 °C, and at those temperatures the SCOP collapses. The result is that the electricity for heating may cost more than the gas burned by the old boiler. Reverso is a new generation of fan coil that works at low temperature and brings the heat pump, with R32 or R290 gas, to its best SCOP. It also heats the room in a few minutes and cools and dehumidifies in summer.

Can I replace radiators with fan coils without redoing the system?

Yes, for heating. The whole Reverso range connects to the existing radiator pipes, even 12 mm diameter ones: in this case it is used for heating only, with a temperature difference (ΔT) of 20 °C. No chasing walls and no new floors. For cooling as well you need larger insulated pipes, at least 16 mm, and a condensate drain; where there is no slope, an optional condensate pump is available.

How much does a fan coil cost?

Reverso starts at €524 list price, control and valves excluded. The cost of the system depends on how many rooms you want to air-condition: usually one Reverso per room. Thanks to its efficiency, comfort is higher and the heat pump or boiler works at maximum efficiency: with the savings on your bills, the cost difference between a radiator and Reverso is recovered in one season. Room-by-room sizing and the full quotation are free.

How many square metres does a fan coil heat?

It depends on the home's insulation and the water temperature. For example, in a renovated home with average insulation a Reverso FS 400 with water at 50 °C heats about 25 m². We calculate the right size for each room with our simulation software, for free.

How much energy does a fan coil use?

Very little: the Reverso DC Inverter motor draws from 3 to 17 W depending on size and speed, less than a light bulb. Heating and cooling are produced by the heat pump or boiler; Reverso, working with low-temperature water, lets them run at their most efficient point.

What is the difference between a fan coil and a split air conditioner?

A split system has outdoor units connected to the indoor units through refrigerant gas which, in case of leaks, is toxic and also flammable. A fan coil uses the water produced by the heat pump or boiler. Unlike splits, with Reverso you can manage the water temperature: in cooling you reduce the cold draughts typical of splits, and the same applies to heating. It can also be combined with underfloor systems, which is not possible with splits. The result is greater comfort and a much more eco-friendly system.

What are the disadvantages of a fan coil?

Traditional ones are bulky, noisy and move a lot of air. Reverso is 12 cm deep, has a tangential fan delivering an even, quiet airflow, around 20 dB(A) at minimum speed, and an optional radiant panel for gentler heat. Two things to know: cooling needs a condensate drain, and the filter should be washed 2-3 times a year.

How is a fan coil powered?

With water from the system, hot in winter and cold in summer, and a standard 230 V power supply for the fan and control.

Does it work with a heat pump?

It's the ideal match. Reverso performs with low-temperature water, 40–45 °C in winter, and in summer at 7–12 °C or even 10–15 °C, so the heat pump runs with higher SCOP and SEER.

How noisy is it?

At minimum speed the sound pressure is about 20 dB(A) at 1 metre (ISO 7779), below the threshold of hearing. The aluminium tangential fan avoids the typical noise of centrifugal fans.

Can it be installed in a bathroom?

Yes, with Reverso BT: it is the only bathroom fan coil, thanks to IPX4 protection, with chrome aluminium towel rail and radiant panel as standard. This matters because it works at low temperature. With a heat pump the water is at low temperature and bathroom towel radiators perform poorly: the bathroom stays cold and electric heating elements often have to be added. Reverso BT heats well even with water at 40–45 °C.

Can I heat and cool different rooms at the same time?

With a 4-pipe system, yes: FS and SM are available with a 3-way valve for 4 pipes, heating and cooling simultaneously. The cost of the Reverso unit doesn't change, but the system costs more.

Does the filter need replacing?

No: the stainless steel micro-wave filter is washable and lasts forever. Optional antibacterial and antiviral filters are available for those who want more.
